Travel & Stay
We chose our wedding to be on a wednesday, because most air traffic only fly on weekends.
Where to stay on the Island?
The wedding venue is close to the city El Mèdano in the south
The north is green, has more impressive scenery with black volcanic beaches.
The south has more sun, and white sand beaches
Santa Cruz is the capital city and is in the north-east side
Regardless of where you stay, driving from the South to the North of the island takes only about 2h,
so it should be possible for you to enjoy a bit of everything while you are here.
What flights to take?
Check out webpages like Skyscanner or Kayak
Want direct flights, we usually go with Norwegian or SAS
Or maybe you want charterfeber vibes and go with holiday packages.
How to get around?
Renting a car is great, it takes about 2h on the highway from north to south. It is also possible to take the mountain roads.
Teide national park can be difficult in some areas, as the roads are tight and full of turns. But the scenery makes up for that. Masca and Anaga can become crowded, plan to go really early, or later in the evening maybe for the best experience. Taking the bus can be a great option.
Tips about visiting Tenerife
It is the biggest of the 7 canary islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, close to Africa. Due to its proximity to the equator, the weather is quite stable throughout the seasons, so you do not need to pack any heavy winter clothes for September, a light jacket for the evenings is recommended still.
Tenerife is a quite varied island when it comes to landscape. In general, the north of the island is a bit more humid, slightly colder, a bit more cloudy, greener and there is a lot of picturesque towns full of locals and traditions. It is also the hotspot for hiking, motorbike riding, and getting a taste of the local culture and food. If all of this sounds good to you, we can recommend you find a place to stay in Puerto de La Cruz, for example, which is a lovely coastal town in the north. It is very close to La Orotava, Alejandro´s beautiful home town. If you rent a car you can take a drive to Jeanettes favorite place, Anaga forest. Grab some dinner in a guachinche (we recommend brasas y calderos, el origen and el romance). As a little heads up, the beaches in the North are not quite as accesible and nice as in the south, there has been a contamination in the water in Puerto de la Cruz, so the beaches have been closed. We will update this webpage in case that the beach in Puerto is open again for swimming.
If you are looking for more guaranteed sun, warmer, dryer weather, better beaches, bigger hotels, more amenities for tourists, including a more international nightlife, or in general, the “syden” feeling; then you might prefer to stay in the south of the island, like Los Cristianos, Las Americas and Costa Adeje. El Médano is also a great option, as this town has the more local character to it while still having a very nice beach, for surfing and kitesurf. It is also the closest town to the wedding venue and the airport. Alejandro and Jeanette will most likely stay here prior to the wedding.
Regardless of where you decide to stay, if you have time, a short visit to Teide National Park is always recommended. Teide is the second highest peak in the European Union, standing at 3718m tall. Visiting the peak is always a good experience if you like hiking, but you need to reserve a night in the cabin to access the peak in the morning, as the access is controlled. Otherwise there is a lift that takes people closer to the top and you can hike the last leg, but also tickets have to be bought in advance. There is other smaller hikes you can take, without permits. Los roques de garcia is an easy and beautiful trail.
